Admission & Assessment

On the day of delivery, you are admitted to our maternity unit. Vital signs, foetal heart rate, and progress of labour are monitored.

An experienced anaesthetist administers the epidural in the lower back. Pain relief begins within 10–20 minutes while you remain fully conscious.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is epidural analgesia safe for the baby?+
Yes. Epidural analgesia is widely used and extensively studied. It does not cross the placenta in significant amounts, and the baby is continuously monitored throughout labour to ensure wellbeing.
Will I be able to push during delivery?+
Yes. Modern epidurals are designed to relieve pain while preserving enough sensation and muscle strength for effective pushing during the second stage of labour.
What is the difference between a normal delivery and painless normal delivery?+
Both result in a vaginal (normal) delivery. In painless delivery, an epidural is used to manage labour pain — the process and outcome are the same, but significantly more comfortable for the mother.
Is every pregnant woman eligible for painless delivery?+
Most women are eligible. However, certain conditions (blood clotting disorders, spinal abnormalities, active infections) may be contraindications. Our obstetrician will assess your suitability during consultation.
Can I choose not to have the epidural once it starts?+
Yes. The epidural can be stopped at any time if you choose, and the effects will gradually wear off. You remain in full control of your birthing experience.
How early should I consult regarding painless delivery?+
Ideally discuss this with our obstetrician during your 36–37 week visit so that your birth plan is prepared in advance. Emergency consultations are also available.
